Dopo la visita del 21 aprile 2015, il Segretario Generale della Federazione Internazionale delle Società di Croce Rossa e Mezzaluna Rossa, Elhady As Sy, ha scritto a tutti gli Uffici della Federazione ed alle Società Nazionali.

«… The Italian Red Cross is there and has always been there, right where they need to be.
They welcome the people as they arrive, they run a medical clinic in Mineo, and they help to reconnect people with their families. But perhaps most importantly, they also provide psychosocial support, helping to treat the invisible wounds that run very deep.

I was struck by their professionalism and their commitment. They are doing remarkable work. They also display tremendous compassion and kindness. For many people arriving in Sicily, having fled their homes in South Asia, or West Africa, or the Middle East, the Red Cross volunteers in Sicily might represent the first kind face they have seen in weeks or months. They treat the people with an immense dignity, and the affection they receive in return is effusive.

On Monday,　I wrote that the weekend’s tragedy, and the others like it, are an illustration of a collective global indifference about the plight of migrants, who come to Europe seeking safety, opportunity, and the hope of a life lived with dignity.

That indifference is not there in Catania, and it is certainly not there in the IRC. I would like to applaud the IRC, and their President (and our Vice President) Francesco Rocca. They are doing us all very proud.

I would also like to thank our team in Europe for the work they are doing to support IRC. We have heard some dire warnings in recent days about the number of people likely to attempt to cross the Mediterranean Sea this year. Too many people have already died this year. We need to be prepared and make sure we continue to stand alongside the remarkable team in Sicily».

«…La Croce Rossa Italiana è lì ed è sempre stata lì, proprio dove c’è necessità di essere. Accolgono le persone al loro arrivo, gestiscono un ambulatorio medico, e aiutano a ricollegare le persone con le loro famiglie. Ma forse la cosa più importante è che riescono anche a fornire sostegno psicosociale, aiutando a curare le ferite invisibili e molto profonde.

Mi ha colpito la loro professionalità e il loro impegno. Stanno facendo un lavoro notevole. Essi mostrano anche enorme compassione e gentilezza. Per molte persone che arrivano in Sicilia, dopo aver lasciato le loro case in Asia meridionale, o nell’Africa occidentale, o in Medio Oriente, i Volontari della Croce Rossa in Sicilia possono rappresentare la prima faccia tipo che hanno visto in settimane o mesi. Trattano le persone con una dignità immensa, e l’affetto che ricevono in cambio è effusivo.

Vorrei anche ringraziare il nostro team in Europa per il lavoro che sta facendo per sostenere la C.R.I. Abbiamo sentito alcune previsioni nei giorni scorsi circa il numero di persone che potrebbero tentare di attraversare il Mar Mediterraneo quest’anno. Troppe persone sono già morte quest’anno. Dobbiamo essere preparati e sicuri di continuare a stare al fianco della squadra notevole in Sicilia
».
